Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Typing Speed
Eyes on your Monitor
It's important to avoid looking at the keyboard as you type. Keeping your eyes focused on your monitor, instead of moving them between the monitor and keyboard, will save you time and allow you to focus more on your work.
Minimal Hand Movements
Don't move your hand and other fingers any more than necessary to reach each key. This speeds up your typing by keeping your hands and fingers close to the home row, and also reduces strain.
Expect to Type Slower at First
If you start out as a "hunt and peck" typist, in which you're looking at the keyboard and using one or two fingers to type, you may find that your speed slows down when you start using the proper technique. This is normal. With time and practice, your speed will improve and you will ultimately type much faster.
Develop Automatic Movements
Learning where the keys are and how to reach them is quick and easy. However, developing a fast typing speed takes time and practice.
Kinesthesia, which includes muscle memory, is an essential skill that we use all the time, allowing us to ride a bike, drive a car, write, feed ourselves, and perform many other tasks. Our body performs these tasks without much thought on our part. The movements are automatic. One of the goals when learning to type is to develop these same automatic movements, so you don't have to think about the position of each key as you type.
